Woodbine Mile 2017 Picks

Woodbine Mile 2017 Picks

Woodbine Mile Preview

In one of the most competitive Woodbine Mile fields in years, five of the 12 race entries are listed in single-digit odds in the morning line. Heading the list at 5-2 is Deauville, a four-year-old Irish-bred for trainer Aiden O'Brien, who has finished in the money in his last six starts, all at the group or graded-stakes level. He was last seen finishing third by less than a length in the (G1) Arlington Million, where he led late into the 1 1/4 mile event but was caught in the shadow of the wire.

He gets a cut back in distance here, and posseses very good tactical speed, so expect him to sit off the lead and come with one big rush as they turn for home.

Another who expects to sit off the lead and then come running through the long Woodbine stretch is World Approval (7-2) for trainer Mark Casse, who won this race last year with superstar mare Tepin. A five-year-old Florida bred with multiple graded-stakes victories to his name, World Approval is looking better with age, as he's won three of four starts on the year, including the (G1) Fourstardave at Saratoga in mid-August.

Conquest Panthera Should Offer a Price

Trainer Casse actually has two in the field, although the second is flying much more under the radar in the form of Conquest Panthera (12-1). Sired by multiple graded-stakes winning Kitten's Joy, he has steadily improved through the graded-stakes ranks until breaking through with a win last out in the (G2) Play The King Stakes at Woodbine, where he sat off a very quick early pace and battled through a whole lot of bumping in the lane to score a determined victory.

He'll likely get some pace to run at here as well with the presence of Lancaster Bomber (9-2) a three-year-old and last year's runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf who has been knocking heads and just missing against some of the best turf milers in Europe. Hometown hopes for the race rest primarily with Tower Of Texas (12-1), whose five lifetime wins have all come at Woodbine, and who finished second in this race last year, for his second try after a fifth-place finish in 2015.

The Woodbine Mile goes Saturday, September 16 from Woodbine Race Track in Toronto. It's race #12 of 13 on the day, with an expected post time of 6:34 PM Eastern, and follows two races after the (G1) Northern Dancer Turf Stakes. Check out the full race card on Saturday under Today's Tracks with Bovada or another online racebook.
