The team is named after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and was founded on the 126th anniversary of the event. Chicago Fire did the double in its first season, winning both the MLS Cup and the U.S Open Cup before going on to win further U.S. Open Cups in 2000, 2003, and 2006.
