Buffalo Sabres: Young guns are making progress
With Connor McDavid sidelined indefinitely in Edmonton, the race for the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL Rookie of the Year, is now wide open. He needs to pick up the pace but Buffalo has a contender in Jack Eichel who was selected second overall behind McDavid in the 2015 NHL Draft. Eichel has five goals and Buffalo sits with a 5-8 record through their first 13 games. That’s a solid mark when you consider the Sabres needed 20 and 21 games to bag five wins during the previous two seasons. Following their first two-game winning streak this year, victories over the Flyers (3-1) and Islanders (2-1), the Sabres stumbled as lost a 4-1 decision at home to Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Vancouver Canucks: Embarking on a long seven game road trip
Following a fairly cushy season opening schedule, Vancouver begins what will be their longest road trip of the season in New York today. The Canucks marathon journey will span twelve days and stop in seven different cities - in two countries. While they have all been against Western Conference clubs, Vancouver is 4-0-1 away from Rogers Arena this year and they were a very respectable 24-14-3 as visitors last season. The Canucks last played on Wednesday night when they dropped a 3-2 decision at home to the red-hot Pittsburgh Penguins. Sporting with a 6-3-4 record, Vancouver sits second in the Pacific Division, seventh overall in the West and they’ve earned points in ten of their first 13 games.
Sabres vs Canucks NHL Call: Canucks goaltender Ryan Miller (5-3-4 GAA 2014) versus Linus Ullmark (2-2 GAA 2.73) is the netminding matchup in this contest today.
