Phillies vs Mets: Rubber Match Contest in Queens New York

New York Mets: Comfortably cruising in the NL East
Even when they lose – they sometimes break even. That seems to be the story for the Mets these days as they are getting very little heat from the Washington Nationals. New York is rolling along as they posted a 20-9 record in August – prior to their 14-8 meltdown against the Phillies in the second of this three-game series last night. The Nationals went just 3-6 on days that the Mets lost and it all adds up to New York owning a comfortable 6.5 game lead in the National League East. New York has 30 games left on their schedule and a mediocre 15-15 mark would force Washington to post a 23-8 record to close out their season. The Mets will be back in the MLB playoffs for the first time 2006.
Philadelphia Phillies: Finally bust out of a losing slump versus the Mets
New York has pummeled the stuffing out of Philadelphia this season. The Phillies have been brutal, as the Mets own a 13-2 season series lead heading into this contest tonight. That said, Philadelphia has loaded their season-ending roster with a lot of young and hungry prospects and they are putting up some fight. The Phillies are 7-7 over their last 14 games and 24-16 since the All-Star break – although most of that winning was in the second half of July when they went 11-2. All that said, the Boys from City of Brotherly Love are 53-80 overall and they are dead last in the Majors.
New York vs Philadelphia MLB Prediction: Mets ace Matt Harvey (11-7 ERA 2.48) faces Phillies rising rookie RHP Aaron Nola (5-1 ERA 3.26) in the mound matchup tonight. Harvey allowed just one earned run over 27 innings pitched during five starts in August. Nola posted five wins in six August starts and the Phillies went 5-1 as they outscored their opponents by a 37-20 combined count. We don’t see Nola getting that kind of run support in this contest.
