New York vs New Jersey: NHL Metropolitan Division Battle

New York vs New Jersey: NHL Metropolitan Division Battle

Islanders aim for NHL Eastern Conference top spot

As one of the "feel good" stories of the 2014-15 NHL season, New York is two points behind Pittsburgh for top spot in the East. The Islanders (20-10-0), who have made the playoffs just twice over the past nine seasons, are fresh off a 3-2 win vs Chicago at home on Saturday. Jaroslav Halak (15-6-0), who stopped 34 of 35 shots in the Islanders 3-1 win over the Devils ten days ago, gets the start in goal. Led by All-Star John Tavares New York is fourth in scoring with a 3.03 GPG average. The Isle's are 8-0 in games that go into extra time and they are the only team that has not lost in overtime or a shootout.

Dreadful season continues for the long in the tooth New Jersey Devils

Their 3-0 season start is a distant memory for the Devils who are on a 2-6-3 run and have dropped three straight contests. Sitting with an 11-15-5 overall record, New Jersey is five points behind five teams for the final playoff spot in the East. While experience counts, the Devils take it to a whole new level as they are the oldest team in the NHL with a 30.44 average age. That shows on the scoreboard as Jaromir Jagr & Crew are scoring 2.29 GPG which is good for 24th overall in the league. Sitting third in team scoring, Devils winger Mike Cammalleri will sit this one out with an upper body injury.

Devils vs Islanders Prediction: In their final season at the Coliseum on Long Island, New York has protected their pond well as they are 11-3 at home this year. New Jersey, who have somehow played 20 of their first 31 games on the road, are a decent 8-11-1 as visitors but they are playing their sixth game in ten days. A win, coupled with a Pittsburgh loss to Tampa Bay, moves the Islanders into the Eastern Conference penthouse. That's solid motivation for a young NYI squad and we'll back them with a 500 unit wager on the money line price posted at SportsBetting.ag sportsbook.
