Man United vs Basel UCL Odds
Manchester United are back in the UEFA Champions League after a one season absence during which time they won the UEFA Europa League. United are quite fancied to go far in this season’s tournament with the average price being around +1000 to win the competition, which prices them as fifth favorites. United get their Champions League campaign started with a home fixture against Basel, a game they are -500 favorites to win. The English side is expected to run away with this game so much that Bovada is still offering odds of -150 on a United victory even with a -1.5 spread.
The Red Devils have started their domestic league in fine form with three wins and a draw. Back-to-back 4-0 wins against West Ham United and Swansea were followed up with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City, before United slipped up to draw 2-2 against Stoke City at the weekend.
Man United have shown devastating pace, power and clinical finishing in the Premier League and I cannot see anything other than an easy win for them in this fixture. New striker Romelu Lukaku has banged in four goals in four games and will be relishing taking on a Basel side that is without a win in eight European games. The red half of Manchester has also looked solid at the back with only two goals conceded in four fixtures and as Basel are not known for their attacking prowess, the -130 on Manchester United to record a shutout win looks like the bargain bet of the season so far.
A similar bet to look at is United to keep a clean sheet at -165. Basel has had an indifferent start to their Swiss Super League campaign although they do occupy third place after seven games. Three wins, two draws and two defeats have seen Basel score 12 goals and leaking nine. Worryingly for fans of Basel, who are +1500 to beat Manchester United, they have not managed to record a victory in their last eight European games, registering three draws and five defeats in those games.
15 Goals in 4 Encounters
Basel, however, do have a half decent record against Manchester United so they cannot be completely written off before this latest game kicks off. The two sides have met on four occasions, United winning once, Basel once and there have been two draws. Fifteen goals have been scored in those four encounters for an average of 3.75 goals per game and that makes the +100 for United to score over 2.5 goals look attractive enough for a small punt.
The last time these two teams met was in the group stages of the 2011-12 Champions League and United were held to a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford before Basel won 2-1 at home; United have not beaten Basel on home soil, drawing both games.
There is little value in betting on United to win at -500 unless you are prepared to risk a sizeable percentage of your betting bankroll, instead I’d be placing wagers on United to record a shutout win at -130 and then maybe a point or two on a United 2-0 win at +525 or 3-0 at +650. Whatever you do, save your money for a different game if you are considering taking a longshot bet on Basel to win at +1500 because it simply will not happen.
