Detroit vs Minnesota: Tigers Look to Maintain Playoff Pace

Detroit vs Minnesota: Tigers Look to Maintain Playoff Pace

Major League Baseball is our focus here as Detroit heads into Minnesota to open a crucial three series tonight. Following a 32 day hiatus, Detroit has fought their way back into first overall in the American League Central while the Twins are dead last in the Division. First pitch goes at 8:10 PM ET on September 15, 2014, at Target Field, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Cats will cruise here.

Detroit Tigers: Send their ace to the bump tonight

While this could be his last year in Detroit, due to stalled and sometimes bitter contract negotiations, RHP Max Scherzer (15-5 ERA 3.19) has been the Tigers MVP this season. The Cats are 21-9 when the reigning AL CY Young award winner heads to the hill. Scherzer gave up just one run, on seven hits, over 6.2 innings as Detroit beat the Royals 4-2 for a monster win last Tuesday. Detroit has won six of seven contests and now own a 1.5 game lead over Kansas City who they face this weekend.

Minnesota Twins: Surprise owners of a .500 record versus the Tigers

Somewhat surprisingly the Twins vs Tigers season series is tied 6-6 with seven games still to be played. Scherzer is 2-0 against the Twinkies this season (8-2 career) but it hasn't been easy as he's giving up six runs over eleven innings pitched. Minnesota counters with RHP Anthony Swarzak who comes out of the bullpen to get the start here. Swarzak has slumped when battling Detroit as he is 0-2 with a whopping 12.66 ERA in three starts when facing the Cats. Swarzy is in tough vs Scherzer.

MLB Prediction: We knew the price would be high here and it is. Bookmakers at have posted Detroit as huge road chalk in Minnesota but - we remain undeterred. Since Detroit needs to keep the pedal to the metal - we'll back the Cats with a 1000 unit money line wager here.
