Springboard Mile Preview and Odds

As a brand-new addition to the Kentucky Derby qualifying series of races, the Springboard Mile will award points on a 10-4-2-1 scale to the top four finishers.

The field is led by 6-5 morning line favorite Greyvitos, who made a big breakthrough last time out in winning the (G3) Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar race track as a 19-1 longshot. A Virginia-bred colt for trainer Adam Kitchingman, the Bob Hope was Greyvitos maiden win, after gaining just a single third-place finish in his previous two lifetime starts. 

In the Bob Hope, run over seven furlongs, Greyvitos went right to the lead out of the gate and held off a challenge by the heavy favorite in deep stretch to win by 1 1/2 lengths, with the top two separated from the rest of the field by more than eight. Expect him to come out running again, and see if he can do it again with the added extra furlong.

Several Live Longshots in the Field

In a race that offers lots of value outside of the favorite - who needs to prove his effort in the Bob Hope wasn't just a one-off performance -  Flip The Coin Jan (8-1) is a logical contender in a field with lots of question marks. Although he only just got his maiden win in his fifth lifetime start, prior to that he had been the runner-up in two consecutive efforts at Del Mar and Santa Anita, and has finished in the top three in four of five overall. He settled nicely off the pace in his win in that one-mile race, taking over at the halfway point and pulling away to win by more than seven lengths.

The home-course favorite is actually Texas-bred Redatory (12-1) who is two-for-two lifetime, with both wins coming on the Remington Park dirt. His most recent win was in the Clever Trevor Stakes, a gate-to-wire win in which he beat several others that are entered here. Prior to that he was a 26-1 longshot winner in a race where he showed excellent late acceleration in the final 1/16 of a mile to get up for the win.

Breaking to his outside his Believe In Royalty (5-1), who ships in from Laurel Park where he has won two straight, the most recent of those at the allowance level. Despite being bumped coming out of the gate he was able to grab control early in the race and led by as much as seven lengths before being geared down late in the one-mile run to beat the favorite by more than three lengths.

The 2017 Springboard Mile goes Sunday, December 17 from Remington Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It's race #11 of 12 on the day, half of which are stakes races. Expected post time is 7:40 PM Eastern.
