A long soggy evening doused the Pirates hot bats as Pittsburgh managed just five hits last night. Prior to that, the Buccos bats had been booming as they had scored at least four runs in 13 of 16 contests. LHP Francisco Liriano (3-4 ERA 3.24) gets the call here and he is coming off three quality starts where he allowed two runs, on 13 hits with 29 strikeouts, over 19 innings pitched. Pittsburgh leads the season series 5-2 but this is Liriano’s first start against the Brewers this year.
While they have won five of eight games, we don’t see that run as a “turning point” for Milwaukee. Facts are facts and numbers don’t lie – the Brewers are brutal. They sit last in team batting average (.233) and on base percentage (.286) plus they are 26th in both runs scored (214) and strikeouts (472). Brewers first round selection in the 2011 MLB Draft, RHP Taylor Jungmann, makes his big league debut in this contest. Jungmann moving up from Triple-A Colorado, where he was 2-3 with a 6.37 ERA, is more of a “let’s see what he has” move rather than one that is bursting with confidence.
