Plain and simple, Sacramento is a disaster. From DeMarcus ‘Boogie’ Cousins’ hate for head coach George Karl to Rajon Rondo’s homophobic comments and non-sincere apology, most news around the team has come off the court. Cousins is an absolute force who ranks among the top five in scoring, but the team can’t make it work around him. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2005-2006, but haven’t been able to get a No. 1 overall draft choice, either. Apart from Cousins, five other players score in double figures.
Rudy Gay, Darren Collison, Rajon Rondo, Marco Belinelli and Omri Casspi are a good supporting cast when the Kings have the ball, but defense isn’t their strength. Rondo admitted to quitting playing defense when he was in Boston, while Belinelli and Cousins are very offense-oriented.
The Kings’ D-League affiliate team, the Reno Big Horns, played a few games with a new strategy that involved using only four defenders while the fifth player sat at the opponents end, waiting for a full-court pass. There was talk this could come to Sacramento, which would only add to the season’s narrative.
Outside of the poor play on court, operations have been ugly. Former player Vlade Divac is the vice president of operations and has some very unique ideas, some which would likely not work too well. In addition, there was talk that head coach Karl was going to be fired, but instead all of his assistants were let go without Karl’s permission, angering the coach. Add Cousins’ feud with Karl, and things are not pretty.
