Super Bowl LV: Kansas City Chiefs @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers Predictions

Super Bowl LV Free Picks

The Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL's best team and the defending Super Bowl champions, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the pick to win the big game as 3.5-point underdogs. The Buccaneers have defied the experts all season long and in quarterback Tom Brady, have a six-time Super Bowl winner at their helm. In his first season with Tampa Bay, Brady, 43, will be playing in his record 10th Super Bowl game.

  • The Kansas City Chiefs are 3.5-point favorites to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55
  • Favorites have covered in just three of the past nine Super Bowl games
  • Tampa Bay will be the first team to play the Super Bowl at the club's home field, Raymond James Stadium

Historically, no football bettor has made a living in Super Bowl betting by wagering against Tom Brady. That's why it makes perfect sense to go against the form charts and take Brady and the underdog Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the pick to win Super Bowl 55.

With the all-time marks for both Super Bowl wins (six) and appearances (10) on his resume, that alone would be enough to convince a bettor to back the Bucs and Brady. Then factor in the knowledge that Brady is unbeaten in Super Bowls when his team isn't the favorite.

In Super Bowl 36, Brady and the New England Patriots downed the St. Louis Rams 20-17 as 14-point underdogs. Brady also led the Pats to a 28-24 verdict over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 49, a game for which the betting line was listed as pick 'em.

The Chiefs won and covered in last year's Super Bowl. KC defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 as 1.5-point favorites. In Tampa Bay's lone Super Bowl win in 2003, the Bucs beat the Oakland Raiders as four-point underdogs.

The Long Road Home

Tampa Bay is the sixth team in NFL playoff history to defy the Super Bowl odds by winning three straight road postseason games in order to earn a trip to the Super Bowl. But the Buccaneers are the first team in NFL history to also earn the right to play the Super Bowl game on their home field. Super Bowl 55 is slated for Sunday, Feb. 7th at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay.

The Chiefs shouldn't feel too intimidated by having to win on the road against the Bucs. They've already done so this season. KC won 27-24 at Tampa Bay during the 2020 NFL regular season on Nov. 29th.

This will also be the first Super Bowl to match the last two quarterbacks to win the game - Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes, who led the Chiefs to victory last season and Brady, who won Super Bowl 54 with the New England Patriots.

Teams making consecutive appearances in the Super Bowl are 10-9 in the second game of back-to-backs.

Beating The Best

The Chiefs were the NFL's No. 1 offense this season in terms of yardage gained, but Tampa Bay just dispatched the No. 1 scoring offense (31.8 points per game) in the NFL in the Green Bay Packers, beating Green Bay 31-26 at Lambeau Field. Brady joined Eli Manning of the New York Giants as the only visiting QBs to win an NFL title game at Green Bay. Manning went on to upset Brady's Patriots in the Super Bowl after knocking off the Packers.

Brady also beat Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, projected to be the NFL MVP this season. While Kansas City won an NFL-leading 14 games during the regular season, here's another reason to like the Bucs in the Vegas Super Bowl odds - the Chiefs weren't a stellar defensive unit.

KC finished 16th in total defense, allowing 358.3 yards per game. The Chiefs were also 14th overall at stopping the pass, allowing 236.2 yards per game.

In the last four NFL seasons, the team with the best regular-season record has failed to win the Super Bowl.

Kansas City has two outstanding receivers in wideout Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce. Both are capable of dominating a game. Hill scored three TDs against the Bucs in KC's regular-season win. However, Tampa Bay can match the Chiefs in-depth at receiver. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Antonio Brown have all posted 1,000-yard seasons, and Rob Gronkowski is a future Hall of Famer at tight end.

As well, Tampa Bay was the No. 6 defense in the NFL this season.
