Spinaway Stakes Preview

Although there are two clear favorites in the field of five expected to go to the gate for the Spinaway, being juveniles these are all very lightly raced fillies and that always makes for a certain amount of unpredictability. The oddsmaker at Saratoga has given a slight nod in the morning line to Seperationofpowers, listed on top at 6-5 odds. Trained by Chad Brown, she'll be making just her second career start in the Spinaway, but she comes in off a very impressive maiden score. She took the field wire-to-wire in her debut at six furlongs on the Saratoga dirt, where she pulled away from the field in the lane to win by an easy 11-plus lengths.

Her closest rival is expected to be another coming off a win on the track, but Pure Silver (1-1) is a veteran by comparison, with three starts already under her saddle. She's won all three, and last out took the (G2) Adirondack Stakes in convincing fashion. Run at 6 1/2 furlongs, she battled on the lead early through very quick times of 22:44 and 23:04 to the first half-mile and then drew away as they turned for home to win by more than nine lengths. Due to that result, she'll carry top weight of 122 lbs., four more than any of the others in the field. 

Two Others are First-Start Winners

Outside of the top two, Lady Ivanka (9-2) is an Oklahoma-bred for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. She's another who has only one previous start on her resume, breaking her maiden first time out by eight lengths in a race where she came from just off the pace for a strong three-wide rally.

Of the two longer shots in the field, trainer Graham Motion has Maya Malibu (8-1) who is also one-for-one in her young career, taking a maiden event at Delaware Park by sweeping by the entire field on the turn and then pulling away to finish six lengths clear of the rest. Obvious Two (30-1) ships in from Thistledown in Ohio, where she's made three starts, with a win and a second-place finish to show for her efforts.   

The Spinaway Stakes goes Saturday from Saratoga, race 10 of 12 on the day's card, and immediately preceeding the (G1) Woodward Stakes. Expected post time is 6:11 PM Eastern.
