Risen Star Stakes Betting Tips

A handful of horses last seen racing in the (G3) Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds are set to meet again this weekend in the Risen Star, the final local prep before the running of the $1 million (G1) Lousiana Derby.

Among them will be the race winner, Guest Suite (6-1 in the morning line), who sports a record of three wins and two third-place finishes in five lifetime starts. Trained by Neil Howard, he overcame a muddy track in the Lecomte and a wide trip to get up for the win by 1 1/4 lengths.

Following him to the wire was Untrapped (10-1), who already has two starts this year, with a win and a second-place finish.

One of two in the race from trainer Steve Asmussen, who took the Risen Star last year with Gun Runner, this is an improving colt. He showed a lot of patience to wait behind horses coming into the Lecomte stretch and showed a good turn of foot to close on Guest Suite late. The added distance here could very well help him move up a spot.

Those two will both have to contend with the 7-2 ML favorite Mo Town, who comes in from his New York base looking for a second graded-stakes score after winning the (G2) Remsen at Aqueduct back in November.

From a leading sire in Uncle Mo, he watched the 4-5 favorite get away by as much as four lengths in the Remsen. He quickly closed the gap into the final turn before kicking away in the lane. He's likely to face a much quicker pace here and will have to show he's ready for his best off the long layoff.

Rounding out the bottom of the ticket, Girvin (6-1) won his maiden debut at Fair Grounds in December and then prepped for the Risen Star by running second in a turf stake at the local track, closing very well into a pace that was quickening through the last quarter mile, just missing the win by 3/4 of a length.

The 2017 Risen Star Stakes goes Saturday, February 25 from Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. Post time is 5:00 PM Central.
