NFL Draft: Lawrence The Pick To Go No. 1

NFL Draft: Lawrence The Pick To Go No. 1

NFL Draft 2021 Betting Suggestions

  • Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is the overwhelming +10000 favorite to go first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars, who need a QB, are selecting first overall
  • The San Francisco 49ers traded up to get the No. 3 pick, creating all sorts of betting speculation on which player they might be pursuing

Just because Trevor Lawrence is virtually ensconced as the first player to come off the board it the 2021 NFL Draft odds, doesn't mean that there won't be lots of intrigue and numerous betting options to be played during the draft process.

The 2021 NFL Draft is slated to get underway at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, April 29th and after the Jacksonville Jaguars make Lawrence the first overall selection, then it gets interesting.

The New York Jets are second on the clock. They're also in the market for a QB after dealing starter Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers. Will the Jets go with BYU QB Zach Wilson, as the NFL Vegas odds are predicting, or will they go further down the board and look at someone like Ohio State's Justin Fields, North Dakota State's Trey Lance, or Alabama's Mac Jones?

One of those guys is clearly wanted by the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners dealt with the Miami Dolphins to acquire the third overall pick. San Fran has indicated that they did so to draft a QB, but aren't about to tip their hand and say which one. Speculation is they want Fields, although there's also been a groundswell of support insisting that it's Jones who they covet.

Call That Number

While the No. 1 seems a lock, there's plenty of lobbying going on in regards to the second and third overall picks in the NFL Draft odds. Make the right call on these picks and draft night can prove a profitable wagering endeavor.

The Jets are being strongly linked to Wilson at No. 2 and yet there's a constituency that believes they might also be pondering Fields. At No. 3, the 49ers were originally touted as moving up to grab Jones. However, later speculation is now linking the team more strongly to Fields.

Jones might be the most intriguing play of the entire draft. Originally in the NFL Draft prop bets, there was an over/under wager on when the Crimson Tide QB would be selected. At the time, the total was set at 18.5. Today, a similar prop wager is offering -400 odds that Jones will go in the top five selections.

QB Or Not QB?

There have been some memorable NFL Drafts when it comes to the selection of QBs. In 1983, a record six QBs were selected in the first round, including John Elway, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Ken O'Brien, and Todd Blackledge.

More recently, the 2018 NFL Draft brought Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Darnold into the NFL via first-round selections.

This year figures to be another great year for QB selections. Perhaps even a record-setting affair. The NFL Draft Vegas odds are setting the bar at 5.5 as far as the total QBs to go in the first round.

No Love For Heisman

Alabama's DeVonta Smith was the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy as the best player in NCAA football since Desmond Howard in 1991. However, it's done little for his NFL Draft odds.

Smith is rated as the third wide receiver who will come off the board.

Both LSU's Ja'Marr Chase and Smith's Alabama teammate Jaylen Waddle are rated ahead of him in the NFL Draft picks.
