As one of the youngest and most exciting teams in the league, the Chicago Cubs are living up to their MLB preseason expectations. Posted in a tie as the sixth favorites to win the World Series back in March, Chicago is well positioned in the National League playoff race. Despite a stellar 71-51 record, Chicago is third overall in the NL Central as they trail St. Louis by 6.5 games and Pittsburgh by three games but still appear to be postseason bound. If the Cubs were in any other group, apart from the two MLB Central divisions, their perch would be much higher. We like the Cubbies in this matinee match.
Chicago trails Pittsburgh by three games in the NL Wild Card race but the Cubs are six games clear of the San Francisco Giants. A 20-20 record over their last 40 contests should get the Cubs into the postseason. Over in the American League, Cleveland owns a dismal 58-65 record but they just took three of four contests from then AL East leading New York. The Tribe outscored the slumping Yankees by a slim 16-14 margin in the Bronx over the weekend. Despite sitting last in the AL Central, 17 games behind Kansas City, the Indians are six games out of the AL Wild Card race - it's false playoff hope.
Cubs vs Indians MLB Call: Chicago LHP Jon Lester (8-9 ERA 3.58) faces Cleveland RHP Corey Kluber (8-13 ERA 3.52) in a fairly even pitchers duel here. The Cubs gain a couple of advantages with today’s matinee start time. Chicago players were sleeping in their own beds last night while the Indians were on a red-eye flight from the Big Apple to the Windy City. Also, Lester has an edge in day games with a 2.92 ERA over the 3.47 mark Kluber as posted.
