MLB Prediction: Fired Up Pirates Host Plummeting Padres

Pittsburgh Pirates: NL Wild Card race leaders
One can only imagine how good the Pirates numbers would look had Pittsburgh not opened the 2015 MLB season with a pedestrian 18-22 record. The Buccos rough start ran until May 22 and Pittsburgh was nine games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central standings at the time. Since then, due to a nice mix of timely hitting and stud pitching, the Pirates have posted a 29-12 record and trial the Red Birds by six games. The Buccos are 2.5 games up on the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card race.
San Diego Padres: Mini-winning streak was snapped in the Show Me State
To the surprise of many, San Diego opened a ten-game pre All Star break road trip with a pair of wins in St. Louis during the weekend. The run didn’t last as the Cardinals clawed back with a pair of wins to split the series. While both losses were close (2-1 and 3-1) the Padres continue to plummet as they are 7-13 over their last 20 games and they've been outscored by a 100-60 margin during the skid. San Diego is fourth overall in the NL West as the Friars are 7.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Padres vs Pirates Prediction: RHP A.J. Burnett (7-3 ERA 2.05) vs RHP Jeff Shields (7-3 ERA 4.14) is the pitchers duel tonight. Burnett is enjoying the best season of his 13-year career and he owns a sparkling 1.29 ERA over seven starts at home. While he continues mow down hitters via the strikeout (123 K's) Shields 4.14 ERA is a little rough – his 5.50 ERA during road games is more alarming. After taking time to ponder Pittsburgh’s relatively low price – we are going to plunder with the Pirates here.
