Haskell Invitational A Key Breeders’ Cup Prep Race

Haskell Invitational A Key Breeders’ Cup Prep Race

Haskell Invitational 2021 Betting Picks

  • The Haskell Invitational on July 17 at Monmouth Park brings together the top three-year-thoroughbred racehorses
  • It ranks behind only the Triple Crown races in terms of stature during the sophomore racing season
  • The Haskell winner is granted automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup season-ending championship events

Horses don't gain entry into the Haskell, they are invited to participate. This guarantees that only the cream of the crop in the three-year-old thoroughbred division are offered the chance to participate in this horse race.

Slated to be contested July 17 at Monmouth Park, in the horse racing odds the Haskell is viewed in stature only slightly behind the annual Triple Crown races.

The Haskell is a Grade 1 stakes race at a distance of 1 1/8 miles with a $1 million purse. This year, the 54th edition of the Haskell offers to the winner a fee-paid automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Classic on November 6 at Del Mar. The Haskell Invitational will be broadcast by NBC beginning at 5 p.m. ET.

The Haskell Stakes field is expected to contain all three runners-up from this year's Triple Crown races - Hot Rod Charlie (Belmont), Mandaloun (Kentucky Derby), and Midnight Bourbon (Preakness). As well, Hot Rod Charlie was the third-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby.

Mandaloun won the $150,000 TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park on June 13 as a prep race for the Haskell.

Baffert Horse Out

No trainer has won the Haskell Stakes more often than Bob Baffert. Baffert has sent out nine winners of the Haskell. That list includes last year's winner, eventual horse of the year Authentic. The horse would catapult from his victory in the Haskell to a triumph in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Baffert also won the race in 2015 with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. War Emblem, Bayern, and Point Given are among Baffert's other Haskell winners.

However, Baffert looks like he will be shut out of the winner's circle at this year's race. He recently announced that Medina Spirit, whose positive test following his Kentucky Derby win earlier this year, will be skipping the Haskell.

Baffert was suspended following that positive test. He is still awaiting a ruling on whether Medina Spirit will be stripped of his Kentucky Derby triumph.

Betting On The Haskell 2021

While the field is still being finalized for the July 17 Haskell, there are certain historical trends that bettors will want to consider in the horse racing tips prior to placing a wager on the race.

Speed is always a key factor, especially in races contested on dirt tracks such as the surface at Monmouth Park. Horses with tactical speed have emerged victorious in 12 of the past 15 Haskell races.

The last three Haskell winners - Authentic (2020), Maximum Security (2019), and Good Magic (2018) - all were in the top three at the half-mile mark of the race.

Triple Crown experience is another significant element to take into consideration when analyzing the Haskell horse racing tips. Thirteen of the past 15 Haskell winners and 25 of the last 30 to get to the winner's circle at the end of the race were Triple Crown competitors. That list doesn't include last year's Kentucky Derby winner Authentic. Since COVID-19 delayed the 2020 running of the roses until the fall, Authentic wasn't a Triple Crown race winner until after the horse won the Haskell.

As well, 41 of the past 42 Haskell winners had previously won a major stakes race.

Breeders' Cup Futures

Not every Haskell winner also hit the wire first in a Breeders' Cup race, but lately, it's been happening more often than not.

Authentic last year, American Pharoah in 2015, and Bayern in 2014 - all of them Baffert trainees - also won the Breeders' Cup Classic in the same year that they won the Haskell.

Good Magic, the 2018 Haskell winner, was following up a 2017 victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
