Giants vs Padres: California Clash Carries Playoff Weight
Playoff battles continue to boil across Major League Baseball and that's our focus today as we preview and predict the San Francisco vs San Diego contest. The Giants are three games behind the Dodgers in the National League West while the Padres are looking forward to next season. First pitch flies at 10:10 PM ET on September 19, 2014, at Petco Park, in picture perfect San Diego, California.
San Francisco: Giants can't look past lowly Padres
Before they hit the field tonight, San Fran has dropped another half game behind Los Angeles in the NL West title chase. The Dodgers clubbed the Cubs 14-5 in matinee action and now own a three game lead over the Giants. The 2012 MLB World Series Champions have posted a 9-6 record in September and send former ace RHP Tim Hudson (9-11 ERA 3.41) to the bump tonight. Hudson has been horrible as he's allowed 14 earned runs over just twelve innings pitched during three starts this month.
San Diego: Padres play out the string of a fourth straight losing season
Though they have turned some corners this year, San Diego (71-81) is one loss away from a fourth straight losing season. A winning mark seemed possible at the end of August, SD was 64-71 at that point, but the Friars have faltered during a 5-10 recent run. Following a hot start, Padres rookie RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (3-7 ERA 3.63) has cooled some as he's allowed 12 runs (nine earned) over ten innings during his past two starts 9-4 and 8-6 Padres loses to Los Angeles and Arizona respectively.
