Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile Odds: Preview And Future Bets

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile Odds: Preview And Future Bets

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile Contenders

When taking a close look at past results in handicapping the Dirt Mile the first thing that stands out is the fact the favorite has only won the race twice in the 10 years it has been run. That's not to say the favorite should be an automatic toss, but you can have some confidence putting a double-digit long shot on top of exacta and trifecta tickets as well as betting to Win.

BC Dirt Mile Odds to Win at Bovada

Mor Spirit - Has won his last two graded-stakes races by a combined 12 lengths. His speed figures have risen in each of his last four, and he has the highest single-race speed figure in the field.

Practical Joke - All of his five lifetime wins have come at one mile or less, all of his losses have been in races over one mile.

Sharp Azteca - Recent wins have come against small fields, but he has been fast, setting a track record two starts back in the (G3) Monmouth Cup Stakes.

Accelerate - Only one win on the year, has been in the money in every race, and has been taking on a lot of very good horses. Has won three times at Del Mar.

Battle Of Midway - Ran third in the 2017 Kentucky Derby. His recent competiton has been a notch below the best.

Awesome Slew - Has been competitive recently and although he won at a mile last out, seems to want more distance. Sire won the 1 1/4 mile BC Classic in 1998.

American Anthem - Has had trouble keeping up in his most recent tries at the Grade 1 level, although he does have a pair of graded-stakes wins on the year.

War Decree - European-base runner has been trying longer distances recently with a win last out at 1 1/4 miles. Not yet declared for the Breeders' Cup.

Tommy Macho - Has been racing against several of these recently but has yet to show he can win at this level.

Second Summer - Florida-bred has run his last three races in Dubai with mixed results, including a win last out at a mile. Has not yet declared for the Breeders' Cup.

2017 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile Betting

The 2017 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile is race #2 of four on Friday, November 3 from Del Mar Race Track. The race offers a purse of $1 million, is open to horses aged three and older, and of course is run at the distance of one mile on the dirt track.

The Key Betting Trends

  • Several handicappers have Accelerate as top choice as low as +350
  • Practical Joke is listed in some places as high as +1500
  • Can Mor Spirit run faster again, or is he a candidate to bounce
  • 2016 Dirt Mile winner prepped in the Met Handicap/Forego Stakes...
  • ...Same path as Awesome Slew, Tommy Macho

Future Bet Underlays

Both Mor Spirit and Practical Joke are likely to drift upwards in the odds by race time, with Practical Joke perhaps as high as +1000

Future Bet Overlays

Accelerate, Sharp Azteca and Battle of Midway are all candidates to be drifting downwards, and either of the first two could very well be the post time favorite.
