Bravemansgame is in strong form for Cheltenham Gold Cup

One of the most important jumps races of the year is coming up on Friday, March 17: the £625,000 Cheltenham Gold Cup! At stake in the three mile, two and a half furlong race include not only a rich purse but one of the most iconic titles in jumps racing. With a field of 13, it will be an excellent betting race as well, and you will not want to miss it!

The top two finishers from the last two years of the race return to action. Minella Times beat out A Plus Tard in 2021, while A Plus Tard turned the tables on Minella Times the following year. Noble Yeats, who has kept on well after winning the Grand National last year, steps up in class for this as well.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Favorites

In a competitive edition of the Gold Cup, Bravemansgame looks well-spotted at the right price. He carried eight pounds under top-weighted A Plus Tard, and has won six of his last seven, including both since having wind surgery. He looked a proper Grade 1 sort when romping in the King George VI in December, and if he builds on that he should be tough on his biggest stage yet.

Galopin des Champs will be the betting favorite for trainer Willie Mullins. He has had a sparkling run, winning seven of his last eight including the Irish Gold Cup (G1) last out. Though his one foible came when he fell at the last at Cheltenham last year, he was going well enough until then to trust he will run well this year. He also carries seven pounds under top weight.

Take a stand against top-weighted A Plus Tard, the defending champion. Yes, his form in the last two Gold Cups has been good. But, it is a concern that he pulled up last time, especially since he has never so much as finished out of the money, much less failed to finish. He also carries between seven and 19 pounds more than his foes.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Exotic Horses

Though Ahoy Senor is not the most consistent horse, he tends to show up with his sharpest form at Cheltenham. He won over the course last out and was second in a Grade 1 novice race at the Festival last year, after all. He carries 14 pounds less than A Plus Tard, and he will be a good price to use particularly in each-way wagers and exotics.

Minella Indo won two years ago. He is another who, like Ahoy Senor, tends to do his best work when he rolls up to Cheltenham. His tune-up in the New Year’s Day Chase (G3) was good despite coming against inferior horses, and he carries 12 pounds less than the highweight.

The horse who finished a neck behind Minella Indo in the New Years’ Day, Stattler, also deserves a look for exotic wagers. He carries 17 pounds less than A Plus Tard, putting him in a favorable weight situation this time compared to the last time he faced Minella Indo, as well. Though he has a lot to find on the likely favorite, who beat him soundly in the Irish Gold Cup last out, his recent form is still strong enough to get him into the exotics.
