Bovada Bookmaker Honors Tainted Super Bowl Prop

Bovada Bookmaker Honors Tainted Super Bowl Prop

Bovada Did it Correctly

  • Bovada is honoring Super Bowl prop bets wagered on whether someone would run on the field during the game
  • Yuri Andrade wagered $50,000 on this prop and then ran on the field himself to cover his bet
  • The sportsbook is also refunding all losing wagers on this prop bet

A Super Bowl prop offered +750 odds on whether someone would run on to the field during Super Bowl 55 between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Yuri Andrade thought he saw opportunity knocking and came up with a plan to earn himself a fortune.

In the end, though, it's the Bovada sportsbook that is proving to be the real winner of this wagering outcome.

Andrade's plan was to have a $50,000 bet at those +750 odds that someone would run on to the field in the midst of the game. Then, while attending the Super Bowl game, it was Andrade himself who dashed out on the field late in the fourth quarter in the midst of play. In essence, he assumed that he was cashing his own bet, and his winning tickets would be worth $375,000.

A piece of advice though for Andrade, or anyone else who might consider concocting a similar plan to earn their fortune by gimmicking a bet. The wisest strategy would be to not announce it to the world if your ultimate objective is to cash that winning ticket.

Andrade, 31, of Boca Raton, Fla., was arrested for trespassing and required to post a $500 bond to get out of jail. Once free, he took to the airwaves to boast of his brilliant scheme. Andrade told a Tampa Bay radio station that he'd recruited several friends to each place the maximum wager on the Super Bowl prop of $1,000.

Evidently, it never occurred to him that Bovada might be listening, or at the very least, would hear of his highly-irregular plan.

Bovada Launches Investigation

A Bovada spokesperson acknowledged to TMZ that soon after the Super Bowl ended, the company had launched an investigation into what it called "some betting irregularities on our Super Bowl prop, 'Will a fan run onto the field during the game.'"

The company indicated that it would be voiding all wagers on this prop that exhibited all knowledge of Andrade's plan. The company has also been terminating any account that its internal investigation determines belongs to someone who was part of Andrade's plan.

At the same time, Bovada is paying out winnings on any Super Bowl prop wagers that display no evidence that they were in on this conspiracy. As well, the company is refunding all losing tickets in this betting market.

"Our players have always trusted us to ensure the integrity of all props offered in our sportsbook," Bovada said in a statement released via the company's Twitter feed. "We will continue to make sure that any publicity stunts or ill-intended behavior can not adversely affect the outcome of a player's wager."

Move Wins Bovada Fans

Under the circumstances, Bovada could have easily declared this entire bet a push, since the outcome was rigged. That would've meant no one won or lost and all bets would be refunded. The decision not only to pay out to unsuspecting bettors who won their Super Bowl prop wagers, but to also refund all monies to those who'd lost on the play, is winning the betting site fans.

"That's pretty solid of them," Bill posted on Reddit. "Push on No, payout Yes, excluding the cheaters."

The company admitted that it was well aware of betting irregularities on this particular wager long before the kickoff of Super Bowl 55.
