Preakness Betting
#9 Authentic – the 2020 Kentucky Derby winner – is a towering favorite. A winner of five of six starts with over $2.8 million earned, he has also won the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth and the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita. Trainer Bob Baffert has won the Preakness seven times already and looks to break the all-time record with eight. Authentic will be very difficult to beat, as Baffert has already accomplished the Derby to Preakness double four times since 1997.
#3 Art Collector missed running in the Derby due to a minor injury, but the son of 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini has won five of nine starts and has crossed the finish line first six times, including his last five races in a row. He won the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes over Swiss Skydiver, then added the Runhappy Ellis Park Derby. Tom Drury has a major chance with this bay colt.
#7 Ny Traffic ran Authentic to a nose in the Haskell, and was the top choice or dark horse for many going into the Kentucky Derby. He has been knocking on the door, with placings in Grade 2, Grade 2, Grade 3, and Grade 1 races since February. Saffie Joseph, Jr. trains.
#2 Mr. Big News was 46-1 when he finished third in the Kentucky Derby. He is back for the Preakness and will be much lower odds, as he is 12-1 morning line. The son of Giant’s Causeway broke his maiden in January in Louisiana, then ran fifth beaten only four lengths in the contentious Grade 2 Risen Star. He won the Oaklawn Stakes, defeating some top runners, so his Derby top three effort should not have been such a shock.
The filly #4 Swiss Skydiver is 6-1 morning line after running second in the Kentucky Oaks. She has earned $1.1 million and five of her 10 starts, with nine top-three efforts. Ken McPeek trains the chestnut, who had won four of five before the Oaks and has already run eight times this year, with seven top-three efforts.
#5 Thousand Words won the Shared Belief Stakes in August at Del Mar over favored Honor A. P., who is the only horse to ever beat Authentic. Thousand Words was scratched in the paddock on Kentucky Derby day, but puts blinkers on in hopes he will settle down and behave. He was a leading two-year-old of 2019 and one of the top choices for the Triple Crown.
