The deliberate tanking earned them a bevy of first-round picks, two of which resulted in Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, who are both arguably top-20 players today and still years away from their prime.
The franchise seemingly has a new mantra — “the time is now.” No, the front office isn’t openly saying it this time around, but with an early-season trade for Jimmy Butler, that’s exactly what they’re signaling. Adding Butler now brings the roster up to three All-Stars, which trounces other Eastern Conference foes.
The Butler move doesn’t come without risks. Despite his overwhelming talent, Butler has been run out of town by two teams in two seasons. His contract expires at season’s end, and there’s no guarantee he’ll want to stick around the “City of Brotherly Love.”
While team chemistry is certainly anyone’s guess, there’s no denying Philadelphia has one of the most talented teams out East. This predicament makes them a must-bet team for the foreseeable future.

Our guess is Embiid remains the focal point. He's perhaps the most athletically-gifted seven-footer to ever play in the NBA. Unlike most uncoordinated big men, Embiid glides through the court with grace, causing mismatches with nearly everyone opposite of him.
While offensive chemistry remains a mystery, there's little doubt Philadelphia will be a force on defense. Butler is one of the premier perimeters defenders in the NBA, the 6-foot-10 Simmons is the longest guard in the league, and Embiid is a freak of nature. Good luck picking apart that trio. This makes the 76ers a good play for point unders — especially while they tinker with the Butler-Embiid-Simmons experiment on offense.
Philly is a hot pick for Eastern Conference winner futures, and they should be, but we'd be conservative with the amount of money you'd put on them.
Embiid and Simmons are still inexperienced. Butler hasn't been part of a competitive team in years. Head coach Brett Brown has a career winning percentage well under .500.
That mix doesn't give us as much confidence as say the Celtics, with the proven head coach in Brad Stevens and NBA title winner Kyrie Irving (who hit the game-winning shot for that championship, no less). Toronto, led by former Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, evokes more confidence, as well.
Again, we're not saying the 76ers aren't future-bet worthy. Matter of fact, we'd take their top-three players over anyone else in the East. However, we'd push pause until we have a better of idea of how Butler fits into the picture. Honestly, that might not be until 2019-20 — and that's if Butler resigns. Pay close attention to that chemistry before dropping any big money on Philadelphia futures.
