UFC Betting: UFC 189 Preview
Main Event: Chad “Money” Mendes vs. Conor “The Notorious” McGregor for the Interim Featherweight Championship Belt
Odds: McGregor -160, Mendes +130
McGregor should win this fight because…
Once expected to be one of the biggest matches of 2015, McGregor’s original opponent and current featherweight champion Jose Aldo recently backed out of the match due to a rib injury. Now McGregor will be facing off against Chad Mendes, a quality fighter in his own right, owning a 17-2 record in his MMA career. With that being said, McGregor is one of the topped ranked fighters in the UFC and will likely be frustrated at losing the opportunity to face the champion.
McGregor has been a dominant force in the featherweight division, winning 3 of his previous 5 matches in the first round, a difficult feat for someone in this weight division. While Mendes is a high quality opponent, and should be able to survive the first round, McGregor’s dominance is something that should not be overlooked and he should win the match.
Pick: McGregor
While the main event may not be as great as expected, UFC 189 still has a great fight card for bettors to take advantage of. Some of the best fights on the undercard include…
Mike Swick vs. Alex Garcia
Odds: -400 Garcia, + 300 Swick
Swick should win this fight because…
Considered by some experts to be the best underdog pick of the night, Swick makes his return to the Octagon after an absence of nearly three years. Swick, who claims to be the healthiest of his entire UFC career, looks to make the most of his return to the cage against Garcia. Swick comes into the match with better striking, while Garcia favours the ground game. Since neither has made a MMA career through submission, Swick, through his slightly superior striking and better defense, should be able to start his triumph return in the right fashion.
Pick: Swick
Rory MacDonald vs. Robbie Lawler
Odds: MacDonald -185, Lawler +150
MacDonald should win this fight because…
MacDonald, being the only Canadian fighter in UFC 189, is a solid betting option this weekend. Entering UFC 189 with a career record of 18-2, MacDonald brings a mix of defensive prowess and striking skills. While he is facing a MMA veteran in Lawler (25-10 in his career), MacDonald has a slight edge over his opponent in some of major MMA stat categories, including defensive efficiency and significant strikes landed per minute.
Pick: MacDonald
