Texas Valero Open Predictions
In recent years, when it's come time to tee it up at the Valero Texas Open, firsts have proven to be foremost. Betting on the favorites or the usual PGA Tour contenders in the Valero Texas Open odds have gone out the window. Three years in a row, the champion at the Valero Texas Open was a first-time winner on the PGA Tour. Will that trend continue in the 2021 event?
- The last three winners of the Valero Texas Open were all first-time PGA Tour winners
- Corey Conners, the 2019 champion, was a Monday qualifier
- In 2020, the Valero Texas Open was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic
When seeking to pick out a winner in the betting line in the Valero Texas Open PGA Tour odds, it's best to look down the list of contenders. Way down the list of contenders, as a matter of fact.
The goods news when wagering the Valero Texas Open Vegas odds in the past few tournaments was that if you correctly selected the winner in the tournament's opening line, that choice was going to pay a handsome price.

Andrew Landry, the 2018 winner, opened with a betting line of +15,000. Kevin Chappell was offered at +2500 in the PGA Tour golf odds prior to his 2017 victory. Charley Hoffman, the 2016 Valero Texas Open champion, was +2500 in the pre-tournament future book. In 2015, a pre-event wager on eventual winner Jimmy Walker came with odds of +2000.
One of the oldest tournaments contested on the PGA Tour, the Valero Texas Open was first played in 1922. It's contested at a variety of courses in San Antonio. Great things are known to happen in this event. In 1951, Al Brisch became the first player to record a round of 60 in a PGA Tour event. Four years later, Mike Soucek won the tournament with a four-round total of 27 under par. That stood as the record for a PGA Tour event until 1998.

Conners Won It The Hard Way
The 2019 victory by Corey Conners was the epitome of what the Valero Texas Open has been all about the past few tournaments. Conners was a Monday qualifier who was playing on conditional status. He was a such a longshot to win, there wasn't even a pre-tournament betting line on him offered in the Valero Texas Open Vegas odds.
Corey Conners 🇨🇦 has been on a tear lately, finishing third at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and seventh at The Players Championship...@BobWeeksTSN & @coryworon on what has led to Conners' surge and a big win for Justin Thomas: https://t.co/OE9Ey1rwZ6 pic.twitter.com/w5jWUtSlro— SportsCentre (@SportsCentre) March 14, 2021
The Canadian from Listowel, Ont. finished with a four-day total of 20-under par 268. That was the lowest score to win the event since Tommy Armour III carded 23-under in 2003.
Zach Jonhson (2008-09) was the last player to win the Valero Texas Open in back-to-back years. Arnold Palmer (1960-62) won the tourney three years in a row, while Bill Mehlhorn (1928-29) also won in successive years.
Hoffman A Frequent Contender
Hoffman finished second to Conners in the 2019 Valero Texas Open. While his 2016 triumph remains his lone victory in this tournament, the fact of the matter is that Hoffman is frequently among the contenders on the leaderboard during the final round of play.

Hoffman and Chappell tied for second in the 2011 event behind winner Brendan Steele. He tied for third in 2013 and was tied for 11th in both 2014 and 2015.
Scheffler Worth Consideration
If the run of first-time winners at the Valero Texas Open is going to be maintained in 2021, a good bet in the PGA Tour golf odds to be the player who continues the streak would be Scottie Scheffler. The 2020 PGA Tour rookie of the year is currently No. 32 in the World Golf Rankings.

Scheffler is still seeking his first PGA Tour win, but he's been in contention in a couple of events this season. Scheffler was fifth at the WGC - Workday Championship and seventh in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
