Champions League Final: Manchester City Favored In All-England Tilt

UEFA Champions League 2021 Final Breakdown

For the second time in three years, the UEFA Champions League final will be an all-England affair. And it's the newcomers who are favored to carry the day in the UCL picks. Manchester City is the -103 betting choice to cop the cup as they play in their first UEFA Champions League final. Chelsea, UCL champions in 2011-12, is the +228 underdogs to win the final.

  • Manchester City are -103 favorites to win their first UEFA Champions League final
  • Fellow English Premier League club Chelsea are +228 underdogs to take the title
  • The UCL final is set for May 29th at Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey

It isn't often that bettors will get a UEFA Champions League final preview a few weeks prior to the actual match, but that's the case this year. Manchester City and Chelsea will play May 8th in an English Premier League match, exactly 21 days prior to their clash in the UCL final. A win in that match will clinch the EPL title for Man City.

A win on May 29th over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final at Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey will assure Manchester City a place among soccer's legendary super teams.

City is the -103 chalk in the UCL betting odds. Chelsea is the +228 underdogs.

City's Success Story

During this season, Manchester City has proven to be quite a consistent side. They've established several impressive marks in the record book. They set a national record with 14 straight away wins and a club standard by going 17 away matches without suffering defeat.

City posted a best-ever tally for the longest run of consecutive wins in top-flight history, chalking up 21 straight victories between December and March. As well, the club equaled their own record by going 28 games unbeaten across all competitions.

City also won all nine of their competitive fixtures in January, the most by a team in the top four tiers of English football in a single month since the formation of the Football League in 1888.

Chelsea No Longer Blue

Chelsea is a different squad since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager. Their 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the home leg of their UCL semifinal marked Chelsea's 17th clean sheet over the past 20 matches. Chelsea eliminated the 13-time European champions 3-1 on aggregate.

Tuchel is 1-0 against Manchester City this season. City claimed its only win over Chelsea while Lampard was the manager. Chelsea was ninth in the EPL when Tuchel took over. They're now fourth in the table and in both the UCL and FA Cup finals

City Of Champions

Even though this will be their first journey to the Champions League final, Manchester City and defending champion Bayern Munich opened as the +450 co-favorites in the UCL betting odds.

En route to the Champions League final, Manchester City has failed to win just one match, going 11-0-1. The closest mark to a blemish on their record was a goalless draw away to FC Porto in the group stage. City has outscored the opposition 25-4 in tournament play, never allowing more than one goal in any match. They've tallied at least twice in every match during the knockout stage of the event.

They handily dealt with Paris Saint-Germain, last year's losing finalists, in the semifinal. Manchester City rallied from a 1-0 first-half deficit to win the away leg 2-1. Algerian national team captain Riyad Mahrez scored a brace of goals as City won the home leg 2-0.

Just Miss Landing A Quad

Manchester was pursuing a unique soccer achievement this year, seeking to win four major trophies in the same campaign. Already, they've won their fourth successive Carabao Cup final, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the April 25th final.

One more victory will give City a fifth English Premier League title since 2011-12 and third in four seasons. However, Manchester City came up short in a bid to win a second FA Cup in three years. In fact, it was Chelsea that defeated City 1-0 in an FA Cup semifinal.

However, a Champions League triumph would put City alongside Liverpool and cross-city rivals Manchester United as the only English sides to win three trophies in a single season. In 1998-99, United won the UCL, EPL, and FA Cup. In 1976-77, Liverpool completed a treble of the English League title, European Cup and League Cup.

Chelsea Has History on Their Side

Manchester City may be the betting choice in the UCL Vegas odds, but it's Chelsea that owns the history of UCL success. Chelsea won the UCL title in 2011-12. They lost to Manchester United in the 2007-08 final.

Interestingly, both UCL finals involving Chelsea were decided via penalty kicks. Bettors might want to consider playing the moneyline draw wager at MyBookie at odds of +224.
