Beverly D. Contenders

#2 Mean Mary should be able to get the best trip in the Beverly D. The daughter of Scat Daddy always shows sharp speed, and should be able to outjump both #7 Oh So Terrible, who hasn’t shown her previous speed this year, as well as #5 Naval Laughter, who is improving but came from off the pace in the Modesty and does not get the most aggressive rider in Sophie Doyle.

Mean Mary keeps her regular rider, the reliably aggressive Luis Saez. She will have no problem with the mile and three-sixteenths distance coming off of a G2 win at a mile and a quarter, and even if there is some leftover wetness in the turf after rains early in the week, she should have no trouble bringing her best.

Her toughest foe is the lone three-year-old facing older, #4 Santa Barbara. This filly ships over from Ireland for trainer Aidan O’Brien. Her previous visit to the United States was a successful raid on the Belmont Oaks (G1), where she encountered trip trouble but rallied late to get up. And, she already has a G1 placing against older in the Pretty Polly, where she just missed behind Thundering Nights.

Beverly D Stakes odds

The question is whether Santa Barbara is going to come in time to catch a tough frontrunner in Mean Mary. The best bet is that she will not get all the way there. But, she is an excellent horse with some form against strong older mares and has an excellent chance to fill out the exacta.

Trainer Chad Brown is usually tough on Arlington Million Day, and he has won more editions of the Beverly D. than anyone else: six. However, his contribution to the field is not as strong as usual.

Brown sends out #6 Lemista, who makes her third start since relocating to the United States. She was a Group-level horse in Ireland, winning a Group 2 and a Group 3 last year, both over a shorter distance than the Beverly D. However, her only attempt longer than 1 1/8 miles was a poor 10th in the Blandford (G2) last year, raising questions about how far she wants to go.

#3 Joy Epifora has not won a race since 2019 when she was based in Argentina. However, she has hit the board in many of her American starts, including a strong second in the Modesty (G3) last out. She adds cheekpieces, something trainer Ignacio Correas probably hopes will get her a bit more focused to finish the race.

The last horse in the field is #1 Bramble Queen. She ran third behind Naval Laughter in the Modesty Stakes last time out, and typically puts forth an honest effort wherever trainer Mike Dini places her. However, the mile and three sixteenths appeared a little too long for her last time, and now she faces a field of tougher foes.
