Men's Tournament

As of today, here’s who Bovada has pegged to win the men’s bracket:

  • Novak Djokovic (+130)
  • Roger Federer (+450)
  • Rafael Nadal (+550)
  • Alexander Zverev (+900)

This feels like a toss-up between Djokovic and Federer. The former is currently the number-one ranked player in the world. Djokovic has won six Australian Open titles — more than any other Grand Slam — last winning it in 2016.

Meanwhile, Federer is the world’s third-ranked player (Nadal is second), but has won this tournament in back-to-back years. Like Djokovic, he’s won the event six times before during his illustrious career.

If you’re a believer in “riding the hot hand” (which you should be), Djokovic makes a lot of sense to win the 2019 title. A year ago at this event, he re-aggravated an elbow injury which derailed the first half of his ATP season. The Serbian bounced back, though, claiming Wimbledon and US Open champions en route to a top world ranking.

Djokovic should be able to continue his comeback story at Melbourne. Federer, while the two-time reigning champion, is six years Djokovic senior. We hate to play the age card since this is an all-time great we’re talking about, but Federer’s best days are behind him.

However, if you’re bettor that likes going against the grain, Zverev should grab your attention. With the “big three” of Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal all into their ’30’s, this sport will soon belong to the 21-year-old Zverev. The German phenom is fresh off an ATP World Tour victory, upsetting Djokovic in a thrilling final and Federer in the semifinals. The scorching-hot Zverev is a great darkhorse bet in the Australian Open.

Pick: Djokovic (+130)

Since we’re on the topic of new phenoms taking tennis by storm, Naomi Osaka is that fresh face to look out for in the Australian Open. Like Zverev, she’s only 21 years old, but already accomplished. In the US Open, she dominated her idol Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4 in the finals to claim her first-ever Grand Slam crown.

Despite the strong showing in New York City, Bovada still has Serena as the clear-cut pick to win in Melbourne. Below are the sportsbooks odds-on favorites as of today:

  • Serena Williams (+400)
  • Simona Halep (+900)
  • Angelique Kerber (+1000)
  • Naomi Osaka (+1000)

Honestly, betting Serena is the sucker’s bet here. Bookies tend to give her favorable odds, knowing the betting public will gravitate toward her off name value alone. Don’t fall into that trap.

While there’s no question Williams is an all-time great, the 37-year-old has also won just two Grand Slams since 2010 (both at Wimbledon). An up-and-down ATP season, where she skipped numerous tournaments including the Melbourne competition, has her ranked a lowly 16 in the world rankings.

We believe Halep is the player to beat. The top-ranked player fell just short of winning the 2018 Australian Open, losing to Caroline Wozniacki in the final. With the reigning winner battling arthritis, that leaves the door wide open for Halep to win. Wozniacki has long been a thorn in Halep’s side, winning five of their seven matchups, but her diagnosis makes her vulnerable come January.

Pick: Halep (+900)
