English Premier League Props: Will Tottenham Go Unbeaten at Home?

English Premier League Props: Will Tottenham Go Unbeaten at Home?

The question on everybody’s lips right now is whether or not Tottenham Hotspur can go unbeaten at home during the 2017-18 season. On their way to finishing second in the league in 2016-17, Spurs played 19 games at White Hart Lane, won a staggering 17 of those and drew twice. Tottenham scored 47 goals during those 19 home games and conceded only two goals.

Nobody will argue that Spurs’ home record was phenomenal. It was even better than eventual champions Chelsea who also won 17 games at home but lost on two occasions so it makes no wonder why people think Spurs can match this impressive feat during the coming season.

Bovada are offering odds of +1600 on Tottenham being unbeaten at home during the 2017-18 season, which means if you bet $10 you will lose $10 because there is no way on this planet that Tottenham will remain unbeaten at home this season; do not be tempted by the long odds, they are long for a reason.

If Spurs were playing at their White Hart Lane home then I may be tempted to put a few dollars on them not losing a home game, but they are not. Due to building a new stadium, Spurs are forced to play their home games at Wembley Stadium, a ground they do not hold a good record on.

Spurs used Wembley Stadium for their home games in the UEFA Champions League last season and it did not go well for them. Their first match there saw them slump to a 2-1 loss to AS Monaco before they endured 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen. Spurs did manage a 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow but by that stage they were out of the competition and having to play in the Europa League where they drew 2-2 to lowly Genk at Wembley, and let’s not forget the 4-2 hammering Chelsea gave them in the FA Cup semi-final.

Teams playing in a new stadium traditionally struggle for form; just look at West Ham United’s form when they moved to a brand new stadium last season (seven win, four draws and eight losses). Players and supporters have to get used to a completely different atmosphere while players have to learn about the new pitch. True, Wembley has one of the best playing surfaces in the world, but players know every bump, divot and slight slope in their home pitch. Wembley’s pitch is also much larger than that at White Hart Lane, something that will take some time to get used to.

In short, no, Tottenham Hotspur will not go unbeaten at home during the 2017-18 Premier League. It is as simple as that. If you are wanting to place a wager on a team going unbeaten at home this season you could do worse than put your money on Manchester City at +400. City only lost once on home soil during their league campaign, although they did draw seven matches, which ultimately cost them a place in the top two.

City ended the season on a high note and have added some key players to their squad, particularly in defensive positions where there were short of numbers and quality. In my opinion, whoever finishes above Manchester City this season will win the league and I cannot see Pep Guardiola’s team dropping many points at all, never mind at their home stadium. +400 seems like a fair betting line and I would not deter anyone from having a small punt on this market.

The other Manchester team, Man United, are another half decent bet to go unbeaten at Old Trafford. Like City, united only lost once at home in 2016-17 and they ended with eight wins, 10 draws and one loss. Jose Mourinho’s men may have the Champions League to contend with this campaign but the Portuguese maestro sets his teams up so they are difficult to beat and Old Trafford is usually a fortress. Back the Red Devils at +500 if you think nobody will beat them home.

I’d shy away from backing Chelsea (+500), Liverpool (+1100) and Arsenal (+1100) in this market simply because Liverpool and Arsenal are too suspect in defense and Chelsea have looked vulnerable at the back during their preseason matches, particularly against strong opposition. Chelsea may have been the last team, before Spurs, to go unbeaten at home in the league but I wouldn’t bet on them to do it again. If you are not willing to bet on either of the Manchester teams to not lose at home, I’d probably leave this market alone.
