The Calgary Flames have undergone significant changes since 2015 as they try to build a Stanley Cup contending team. After some lean years, the Flames had a strong 2018-19 season where they finished first in the Pacific Division with 107 points. They made it to the first round of the playoffs but lost to the Avalanche.

In the 2019 offseason, the Flames made big moves trading James Neal for Milan Lucic and signing Cam Talbot. However, the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons saw early playoff exits and missing the playoffs respectively, leading to coaching changes. [+]

The Flames brought back former coach Darryl Sutter in 2021, but longtime captain Mark Giordano was selected in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. The Flames had a very successful 2021-22 campaign, winning their division again and advancing to the second round of the playoffs before losing to the Oilers.

The 2022 offseason saw major changeover, with Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, two of the team’s top scorers, leaving in free agency and via trade respectively. To offset those losses, the Flames made big moves to acquire forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri.

The Flames have undergone significant retooling in recent years to try and build a championship roster around players like Elias Lindholm, Andrew Mangiapane and Jacob Markstrom. While recent regular seasons have been promising, the team has struggled to meet expectations in the playoffs. Time will tell if their latest roster moves pay dividends.

Usually solid on home ice, the Flames have the potential to beat any team at the Scotiabank Saddledome. They can score at will and usually defend soundly in front of partisan Flames fans. Just be weary of where the Flames sit in the standings as they might be searching for a better draft pick or at the end of a long road trip.

It’s usually bad news when the Flames play the Ducks in Anaheim as they rarely come out on top. Theser are the kind of stats you’ll want to pay close attention to when fomenting your betting strategy.

Calgary Flames Betting Tips

The Flames have undergone significant turnover since 2022. After reaching the second round of the playoffs, longtime stars Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk both left the team in the 2022 offseason. To offset those departures, GM Brad Treliving orchestrated deals to bring in forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri.

While Huberdeau and Gaudreau were two of the NHL's top scorers last season, the roster shakeup has not immediately paid dividends. The Flames have struggled in 2022-23 and fired head coach Darryl Sutter, while Treliving also lost his job. New coach Geoff Ward will try to get the most out of a talented but uneven roster.

The Flames do still have strengths, including a solid defense led by Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar, and an elite goalie in Jacob Markstrom. Forwards like Elias Lindholm and Tyler Toffoli provide secondary scoring behind Huberdeau and Kadri.

After being seen as an up-and-coming contender just a couple seasons ago, the Flames now face a clouded future following the major departures in 2022. Getting back on track will depend on the new front office regime finding the right mix around the existing core.

10-Game Metrics

Make sure, when placing a bet on or against the Flames, to take a look at both team's form from the last 10 games.

You'll want to look at With our Without You, or the Corsi Ratings, when you start to delve more deeply into the analytics. Basically, it determines how well a key player performs with, and without, their linemate. Does it make a big difference if their linemate is missing? In the 2014 case of Phil Kessel and Tyler Bozak, it made a huge difference, as you'll see in the video below:
