Weekend MLB Series Preview: Toronto Blue Jays Vs. New York Yankees

Weekend MLB Series Preview: Toronto Blue Jays Vs. New York Yankees

Pitching Preview

Friday Pitchers:  R.A Dickey (6-10, 4.06 ERA) vs. Nathan Eovaldi (11-2, 4.30 ERA)

Dickey is on arguably his best streak as a Blue Jay, winning his last three and only giving up 5 earned runs over his past 5 games (over 36.1 innings pitched). One of the veterans of the team is finding his former CY winning mojo at the right time.

Eovaldi is undefeated in NYC this season (4-0 over 9 starts), and better by over full earned run, but has yet to face the Jays, not only this season but his entire career. This should be an eye-opening game for the relatively young pitcher.

Probable Pitchers for Saturday’s Game: David Price (10-4, 2.45 ERA) vs. Ivan Nova ( 4-3, 3.10 ERA)

He may have only one game as a Jay, but Price has pitched against the Yankees in 27 games over his successful career. His record may be 10-7, but his ERA is a surprising 4.41. Price is like a fine wine or cheese and has gotten better over age (even though he was roughed up earlier this season by Yankees) and should continue to feed off the positive Toronto clubhouse atmosphere.

Nova has been solid in his role this season, but the majority of his success has come against mediocre teams. The Jays will be the most potent lineup he has faced all season (second being the Los Angeles Angels, which he gave up an OPS of 1.098 to). It will be hard for him to contain a the Jays lineup for long enough to garner a win.

Probable Pitchers for Sunday’s Game: Marco Estrada (9-6, 3.40 ERA) vs. Masahiro Tanaka (8-4, 3.84 ERA)

Estrada may be the biggest surprise for the Jays in 2015, winning a permanent spot in the rotation and coming close to the first Blue Jays no-hitter in over two decades. He has already set a career high in wins and is on pace for a career best ERA. His has seen the Yanks twice in his career and has not performed well against. If the Yanks veteran lineup struggles in the first two games, look for the veterans to get hot against Estrada.

Primarily using 2014, Tanaka has dominated the Jays in his career, going 3-1 with an ERA of 3.22 in his brief career. The loss and inflated ERA are due to a poor performance is 2015, but Tanaka has been able to hold a lead for the Yankees since the beginning of July and if this game turns into a slugfest, he is the pitcher of option in the scenario.

Something to Watch…

Fireworks and runs scored!!!

The Jays and Yankees enter the series as the two highest scoring teams in Majors. The Jays are pacing the Majors with 586 runs scored, while the Yankees are trailing behind in second at 528 runs. Still the Yankees old man team has been lighting up the scoreboard as of late, and the Jays improved an already potent lineup with the addition of shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Even with some great pitchers in the series matchup, it’s unlikely either team can be slow downed for very long.
