Portugal has slowly built their international reputation since first appearing at the World Cup in 1966, where the world witnessed the mesmerizing talent of the legendary Eusebio before Portugal exited the tournament at the hands of the eventual winners England in the quarter-finals. They subsequently qualified for the 1986 and 2002 World Cups, exiting in the group stages on both occasions. Portugal then reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2006, finishing the tournament in fourth place.

They suffered a setback in 2014 when they failed to reach the knockout phase of the World Cup, unexpectedly being eliminated in the group phase. [+]

Despite not winning the tournament yet, Portugal has an even better record in the European Championship. First entering the tournament in 1984, where they finished third, Portugal reached the semi-finals in 2000 and 2012, finished runners-up to unlikely winners Greece in 2004, and reached the quarter-finals in 2008. The pinnacle for the team in recent history was in 2016 when they unexpectedly managed to beat France 1-0 in the Finals.

Portugal plays their home internationals in front of an adoring crowd at the Portugal National Stadium, the Estadio Do Jomar, which has a capacity of 37,500.

How To Win At Portugal Football Team Bets

Cristiano Ronaldo is such a force in world football that his mere presence on the pitch moves the betting odds in Portugal’s favor. He is already Portugal’s highest-ever goal scorer with over 115 international goals. Ronaldo’s odds for first goal scorer are always worth a look. He scored many domestic hat tricks for Real Madrid, so look for this prop bet, too. But, he's struggling now he's at Manchester United and in the twilight of his career. Portugal relies on Ronaldo too heavily and is extremely fragile if the Man United star isn’t in the starting eleven.

Portugal’s squad is a curious mix of very experienced, classy players and a new generation of players who are yet unproven on the world stage.

Veterans Ronaldo and João Moutinho provide experience and are both brilliant going forward. However, they have been known to be a bit flamboyant and susceptible defensively.

Midfielders Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes support Ronaldo and André Silva up front. Portugal has lots of potentials and boasts one of the most complete squads in the world.

Pepe remains in the team and is the most experienced player in the squad alongside Ronaldo. With so much young talent now available, Portugal looks like a great outsider bet for the 2022 World Cup. Players like Joao Cancelo and Bruno Fernandes are so exciting and capable of winning games on their own, not to mention the players above.
