Kobe Bryant’s announcement that he plans to retire at the end of the 2015-2016 season sent the basketball world into a frenzy. It’s been a dismal year for the league’s most-storied franchise. Kobe hoists up way too many shots each game, as evidenced by his 35 per cent field goal shooting and around 27 per cent stroke from three-point territory. While he does lead the team in scoring, the gameplan sees most plays run through him. While Kobe wants the ball almost every play, so to do Lou Williams and Nick ‘Swaggy P’ Young.
The trio are shooters first and second, passers third. Some teams can make this work when there are two guys like this, but three is a problem. When the Black Mamba retires this year, the Lakers can hit reset mode, pursue some flashy free-agents, and attempt to restore Laker basketball to the level it should be at.
The Lake Show boast some good, young core players in D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson, who can be building blocks for the future, or valuable trade chips. Head coach Byron Scott has been hesitant to play Russell, which could stunt his growth as a point guard, but for the remainder of the season, Russell should be starting.
When it comes to wagering on the Lakers, the choice should be to bet against them. LA is only ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers and have only two wins against teams over .500 (Washington and Detroit). So clearly, if the Lakers are playing a foe that is in or close to a playoff spot, don’t put down your money. Put your credit card away and walk away.
LA Lakers Next Game
The Lakers aren’t playing well but that doesn’t mean it’s not important to see who they play next. Analysing their next opponents could be the difference between a good and bad bet.
LA Lakers regular season schedule
In the remaining games for the Lakers, they should only be favoured in their two matchups with the Suns, who are redefining the term ‘tank’ as they freefall down the standings and lay out a lineup with minimal talent.
LA Lakers Standings
The Lakers have more wins against the East than the West, but only one division win – clearly one area where thet struggle, especially since they play in a weak division.
